Emptying My Cup

Lao Tzu said long ago that the emptiness is what makes the cup useful.

We spend most of our lives filling our cup with so many things; money, belongings, experiences, accolades.

And then, the time comes when we begin to empty it out so there is room for the light to come in.

Solitude and silence no longer hold the stigma of punishment, but rather stand as well earned space and the opportunity for a soul nap. A time to let our core selves rest, dream and drink again, deeply from the source of all things.

Void of artificial light and sound, life on Earth holds pockets we stumble into where we can see the stars and hear the heartbeat of the world where we live.

We have saved up money and boarded planes to try and spend a few days searching out those pockets. While they were waiting patiently for us anywhere we already were, just beyond the traffic of daily life.

A golden sunrise on a beach on the other side of the planet. A lilac and magenta dusk ushering in the song of a thousand peepers performing their concert to end the day.  The clear view of the Milky Way from our perch on a midnight picnic table at Second Mesa. The deep peace of sleeping children and the soft sounds of their breathing while their cheek rests on our chest.

When we get here, to this moment when we understand the meaning of enough, we won’t be reminiscing over jewelry and possessions; things we thought required our protection.

We will be standing in chosen quiet emptying our cup making room for us to become wisdom containers.
